Brief History
broad-minded presents Universal is a quarterly Music Charity Event with a difference! These events will be held in Manchester on a quarterly basis and will be in aid of Huntington’s Disease Association with all proceeds raised going towards the charity in search for a cure for the illness. These events are more than just that though as they are about being charitable to one another and raising awareness. They are about given unknown talent a platform to succeed to another level whilst bringing communities together at the same time. These events will have visuals to support the theme Universal is identifying.

News reports

Huntington’s Disease Association, News, Information on illness

The Huntington’s Disease Association was founded in 1971 as a self-help group with 76 members to support families and individuals affected by Huntington’s Disease. It was then known as The Association to Combat Huntington’s Chorea. Families at that time lived in complete isolation, unaware of the extent of the disease in the community stigmatised by its hereditary nature. They were further isolated by manifestation of the Disease itself characterised by severe physical, emotional and behavioural problems.

Huntington’s Disease Association is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder causing a steady decline of people’s physical, emotional and cognitive skills. It is a genetic illness every child born to a parent carrying the Huntington's gene has a 50% risk of inheriting the gene and going on to develop the illness at some stage in their life. It affects both males and females equally, the onset of the symptoms are usually in the prime of a persons life between the ages of 30-55, although there is a juvenile form of the illness and people have been known to develop the illness later in life. According to the office of health economics up to 50,000 people in Britain are affected by the ravages of the disease with up to 6,000-10,000 sufferers in the UK at anyone time.

As yet there is no known cure for Huntington’s Disease Carol Carruthers Chair of the Huntington’s Disease Association stated “Sadly there is no treatment which halts the progression of Huntington’s disease. However huge strides have been made towards the understanding of the illness. Many symptoms are better able to be controlled with the introduction of new drugs especially in the problematic areas of depression and emotional and behavioural disturbances. We must be hopeful that in the near future progress will be made which will result in the effective treatment. My greatest wish is that in the near future a treatment or cure will be found what a wonderful day that will be. On a positive note hardly a month goes by without the publication of research which takes us a step nearer to that goal”

The awareness week is extremely important as it helps both the Association along with all the people who in some way are affected by Huntington’s Disease. Life can be stressful in particular for teenagers and children if a family member has Huntington’s Disease. They may have to endure seeing a dearly loved parent changing before their eyes, with the added anguish of wondering if they share their parent’s fate. There is a predictive test available, this is a genetic test that will inform you if you have inherited the faulty gene from your affected parent if you have you will go on to develop Huntington’s Disease at some stage in your life. The decision surrounding whether to have a predictive test or not is a terrible dilemma. The BBC soap Eastenders recently ran a story line highlighting the difficult experiences many individuals have to face when a loved one is suffering with Huntington's Disease .

The Association also has a representative on the body responsible for developing the national service framework for progressive neurological disorders. The branch support group network is the mainstay of the association.
It provides so much by way of mutual support, welfare, fundraising, social events and family days. It provides much needed funding for the association. In some areas branch members have been instrumental in setting up “Advisory Groups” involving Health and Social services.”
